Keswick to Threlkeld: Walk the Old Railway Line

This easy route is a flat, 3-mile-long path that goes through tunnels, over bridges and through woodland. The river weaves in and out below the path, so you are constantly crossing over beautiful views of the River Greta.

From the car park, head left past the hotel and begin the walk through the trees. The path is easy to follow over the bridges and through tunnels, and there is the occasional bench to rest on along the way. Be sure to keep an eye out for bikes, as they can appear quickly and quietly behind you.

There are a few smaller paths that lead down to the river, but avoid taking young children down because the water flows very quickly, even when it is low. The last bridge before Threlkeld has a shallow, slow-moving area that we paddled in recently, but please take care because the water can be faster and deeper that it seems.

Fitz Park in Keswick is just around the corner from the starting point and is a lovely play area for all ages. Just go passed the leisure centre and it will be on your right. You can also follow the road straight down, passed the park, and head into the town from here. We like to go to one of the chip shops and take it back to the park with us, or down to the lake at Friar’s Crag. There is also a pump track across from the park, which is great if you are cycling! Just follow the path along behind the park for around a quarter of a mile and it will be on your right.

The Route

Starting from Keswick, the route is ever so slightly uphill. If you want to make the route easier, you can start from Threlkeld, take the children to Fitz Park in Keswick for a play and then get a bus back to your car in Threlkeld.
