Run by the National Trust, the woodland walk to the waterfall is not to be missed!
There are two main car parks for this walk. We prefer to park at High Force Car Park and walk down to the waterfall so that the children can splash in the water along the way!
However there are also some lovely walks along Lake Ullswater and to the top of Gowbarrow Fell, which I have not yet added here.
From the High Force Car Park
Although most people choose to park in the lower car park next to Ullswater, we prefer parking near high force and walking the loop from the top.
This means you will walk down through the woods, following High Force down to Aira Force. There are several shallow spots where children can paddle in the water but there are also some precipitous areas that children should stay away from, after all these are water rapids.
Once you’ve reached the waterfall, you can walk over the bridge and follow the route on the other side of High Force but we recommend walking a bit further along to the viewing point.
From the Aira Force Car Park
Most people start at the larger car park, next to Ullswater, which also has the visitor centre, toilets and cafe.
Younger children should be fine following the trail through the woods and up to the waterfall; however toddlers may need to be carried for some of the journey as it is uphill and
If you are visiting at the end of the year, the light show is a lovely little nighttime walk through the trees. The winding path from the car park is lit on either side, and the trees shine bright in different colours. It’s a very different atmosphere from the daytime and is worth a visit.
Practicalities
