Muncaster Castle: Gardens, Play Areas and Bird of Prey

We love our days out at Muncaster Castle and will definitely go again and again!

We like to arrive at opening and leave at closing. There is so much to do! As Historic Houses members, entry was free, so we are lucky enough to go as often as we can, which is perfect, because really you can’t do it all in a day. The first time around, we missed the huge swings and some of the fairy garden, which the kids loved.

Our little girl, Melody (2) adores the fairy garden with the little fairy doors and toadstools to find along the winding path. Eli (8) loved the axe throwing in the Weapons Hall which is for ages 8+, they also have archery and crossbows for the older ones, which is all included in the entry price. They both loved the play areas and running around the grounds.

The castle itself is beautiful and richly decorated. Entry is an additional cost though for non-members.

The hawk and owl centre contains several different birds of prey that are well cared for by the friendly staff. The daily flying displays are not to be missed. Although it is a challenge to fit all three in with the other activities available, I recommend going to at least one show. The birds fly right over your heads, you might even have to duck once or twice! The staff were really knowledgeable and we all found the talks about the birds really interesting. I definitely see vultures in a new light!

Muncaster also holds popular festivals and events throughout the year.

Practicalities

  • Parking: set your satnav to Muncaster’s Car Park, and not the castle. The car park is actually across from the main road.
