We’re very lucky that the big man himself, Father Christmas, makes a special effort to visit children in the Lake District on the run up to Christmas Day. There are lots of fantastic Christmas events taking place this year, but if you specifically want to book at time slot to check in with the Big FC then read on, as here we have compiled all the places in the Peak District to meet Father Christmas this year.

Keswick
1. Honister Slate Mine
14th November to 23rd December

A slate mine might not be the first place you’d expect to meet Santa, but Honister’s Secret Grotto makes for a particularly memorable Christmas experience. The adventure starts with a bus journey up to Honister Pass before heading underground with the Chief Elf to explore the mine and visit Santa in his grotto.
There are festive activities along the way, including a visit to the elves’ workshop, before the experience finishes with an underground Christmas sledge ride. It’s a very different way to meet Father Christmas, and one that’s likely to be a hit with adventurous kids.
2. Keswick Victorian Fayre

Keswick’s lovely Victorian Christmas Fayre takes place annually on the Market Square in Keswick. This is a brilliant traditional festive market, with a Santa’s grotto alongside live music, a raffle and lots of lovely stalls.
3. Borrowdale Institute

Borrowdale Institute, in Borrowdale Village, will be holding it’s annual Christmas market and cafe. Free entry. There will be a chance to meet Santa in his grotto, with a gift for every child. There will also be lots of lovely stalls to browse for Christmas treats.
4. Springs Farm
13th, 14th, 20th & 21st December 2026 (1–3pm)

Springs Farm’s Christmas experience combines a farm tour with a visit from Santa. Families can feed the Highland cows, cuddle the sheep and meet the pigs and goats before heading to the café for Christmas crafts, refreshments and a surprise visit from Santa. Each child receives a gift from Santa, with face painting also included.
5. Threlkeld Quarry
5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 22, 23 and 24 December

The Santa train is running in Threlkeld Quarry this December. Enjoy a ride on a steam train, find Santa, and receive a present for every child. Tickets are priced per compartment, with different sizes to choose from.
Ambleside
6. Hayes Garden World

Meeting Santa at Hayes Garden World is very popular and sells out quickly. Children are welcomed by Santa’s elves before heading into the grotto, where they can meet Father Christmas, hear a story and take their own photos. The experience includes singing, dancing, arts and crafts, plus a special gift from Santa.
There are different session options, including standard grotto visits and quieter sessions, designed for children who prefer a calmer experience. You’ll need to provide some details about your child when booking so Santa can prepare a personalised message.
7. Santa Cruises from Ambleside
21st November 2026

Windermere Lake Cruises’ special Santa Cruises are part of Ambleside’s Christmas lights celebrations, departing from Waterhead Pier. Children can enjoy a festive cruise around Lake Windermere while searching for Father Christmas, with help from the Snow Queen and her attendants. Santa then boards the boat to meet the children and hand out gifts.
There are morning and afternoon cruises, with the afternoon sailing followed by the Ambleside Christmas lights switch-on and lantern parade.
8. Hawkshead Christmas Fair
5th and 6th December 2026

This traditional Christmas fair in the picturesque village of Hawkshead features a Santa’s Grotto alongside festive stalls, live music, and a wonderful Christmassy atmosphere. Entry is free.
Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere
9. The World of Beatrix Potter
19th December to 24th December

This year The World of Beatrix Potter is showing The Gingerbread Boy, a festive 50-minute show followed by a visit with Santa. Every child receives a free gift from Father Christmas.
There are two shows on most days, with additional morning performances on Christmas Eve. You can also upgrade to The Gingerbread Boy Afternoon Tea Experience, available with selected 11am performances from 20th to 23rd December. The experience is suitable for children aged 3+.
10. Glebe Markets Christmas Market

You’ll find loads of stalls serving gifts and food, as well as entertainment and choir singing, plus a visit from Father Christmas. This is a lovely setting and well worth a visit.
11. Marina View Bar

Marina View Bar in Windermere is holding a Breakfast with Santa on Saturday 12th December. Each child gets breakfast, a soft drink, fun and games, and a present from Santa. Adults can attend for free, although an adult ticket still needs to be selected when booking.
Ulverston
12. Swan hotel, Newby Bridge

The Santa’s Grotto at the Swan Hotel is known for being a lovely place where children up to the age of 14 can meet Santa and receive a present.
13. Millerbeck Light Railway
5th and 6th December

Millerbeck Light Railway is a private narrow-gauge railway opened to the public on selected dates each year. Enjoy unlimited train rides during your 90-minute slot, meet Father Christmas in his photo booth, plus festive drinks and mince pies included with tickets. Additional refreshments, cakes, and biscuits are available to purchase.
Kendal
14. Castle Green Hotel

The Castle Green Hotel in Kendal will be holding a ‘Lunch with Santa’. From 12pm, a children’s meal is served at 12:30pm, then the children have entertainment from 1pm while the adult meal is served. Each child will receive a present, and it finishes at 4pm.
15. Carus Green Golf Club

Carus Green is holding a festive day on in December, including letters to Santa, bauble decorating, reindeer food making, and Christmas crafts. There will also be that all important visit with Santa and a present.
16 Kendal Leisure Centre

Kendal Leisure Centre usually holds a parent and child Christmas Activity session. Activities include a pool fun and games session, then (on dry land) party games and face painting, followed by afternoon tea with Santa where every child receives a gift.
Grange over Sands
17. Holker’s Christmas Grotto
12th, 13th, 19th, 20th and 21st December

Father Christmas returns to Holker Hall for a magical festive experience. Children can meet Santa in the grand library and receive a gift, as well as taking part in festive crafts with the elves, posting their Christmas letter and following a Christmas treasure hunt. There’s also hot chocolate and festive refreshments available, plus discounted dining and garden access as part of the experience. Tickets are coming soon, so keep an eye on the website for booking details.
Other Lake District Locations
18. Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway Tinsel Train
5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20 December

The Tinsel Train is a lovely way to meet Father Christmas, with festive trains running between Lakeside and Haverthwaite. Families travel in their own compartment, where they’ll meet Christmas characters and Father Christmas, who brings a gift for every child.
Adults are treated to a seasonal drink and snack too, and the train travels to Haverthwaite before returning to Lakeside. Tickets are sold by compartment, costing £125 for up to four people, with additional passengers available.
19. Muncaster Castle
5th, 6th, 12th, 13th, 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd December

Visit Father Christmas in his cosy grotto at Muncaster Castle, where children can share their Christmas wishes and receive a special gift. They can also write a letter to Santa and magically post it to the North Pole in the castle workshop. The Christmas Festival also includes festive gardens filled with lights, music and seasonal surprises, plus a family-friendly trail with clues and prizes.
The Santa experience is an additional ticket to the Christmas Festival, with timed slots available for each child, so make sure you book both if you want to visit Santa as well as enjoy the wider Christmas event.
20. Santa Express Trains at Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway
21, 22, 28, 29 November and 5, 6, 12, 13, 19–24 December

The Santa Express on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is always popular. The festive experience starts at Ravenglass, where children can enjoy storytelling with the Christmas elves before boarding the train to Dalegarth. Father Christmas will be waiting there to meet the children and hand out gifts.
Children also receive refreshments and an activity pack, while adults get refreshments too, before the train makes its return journey to Ravenglass.
There’s also a Santa’s Little Helper Express on 4th and 11th December, aimed particularly at younger children.
